HISTORY

❖ Nor and his twin sister Nauvia were born in Ameri Port, on the coast of the nation of Corvos, to Karim and Hiraani Kolfa. His father, a Corvosi Hyur, was a romantic mercenary, and his mother a Rava wanderer from the arboreal valleys of the Skatay Range. From an early age, Nor was a quiet and dreamy child, a wallflower dragged along by his passionate twin sister. Despite their opposite personalities, Nor was strongly attached to his sister, and the two of them even developed cryptophasia, communicating in a language only for the two of them.As the twins grew, their parents impressed upon them a strong sense of justice and passion for their country. Nor particularly took interest in the swordsmanship practiced by his father, and took pride in learning about Corvos and its history, as well as the many folk tales that his father loved to share. Nor often spent time listening to these stories or the tales of travelers to Corvos and their religions.Peace would not last forever, however, and when the twins were 14, Garlemald invaded and conquered Corvos, along with its neighboring Bozja and Dalmasca. The stories and religion that Nor had grown with were outlawed, and things began to change rapidly. Despite the rapid changes, Hiraani and Karim elected not to fight against Garlemald, instead hoping that the Empire would bring prosperity to Corvos.Nauvia, ever the dogged defender of Corvos, elected to willingly become a conscript, believing this the best course of action to defend her beloved country. Nor also elected to comply with Garlean rule, and was selected personally by the tribunus Regidius sas Silvius to serve as a lictor, expected to defend him as a bodyguard, follow all orders, and perform general guardwork and peacekeeping. Essentially, he had become an enforcer for the Empire.Though Nauvia flourished in her role, eventually earning the oen rank and becoming a duplicarius for exemplary service in crushing rebellions, Nor found himself sinking into a pit of despair. He was ordered to enforce unjust laws, to arrest and execute his countrymen on the spot, and to see them fear him. Regidius delighted in having his lictors perform these duties, and gave them no ability to refuse.Nor would eventually be ordered to arrest his own now-elderly father, one of the last practitioners of the illegal Unyielding Blade technique. He refused the order, and was assaulted and wounded by Regidius, leaving him scarred over his right eye. Due to his refusal, Regidius would order another lictor to do the deed in his stead, and ultimately Nor was unable to save his father.Disillusioned and horrified, Nor was unable to pull back from his position as a lictor for fear of what might be done to him or his family -- particularly his sister, who might be stripped of rank in disgrace. However, the decision was made for him as Vasant Irithyll led an uprising at the castrum in Corvos, culminating in an assassination attempt on Regidius. Nor, the final lictor in the way of the man, stepped aside, casting aside his weapons and allowing Vasant to kill the tribunus.As the castrum burned, Nor walked home to Ameri until he reached the sea and the mangrove forest, and made up his mind to never fight again unless he had to. He kept contact, however, with Nauvia, only to find out that the tribunus still lived. He decided to walk and leave Corvos, both to escape his trauma and also to spare his family having to see him arrested as a traitor.Nor repressed much of the events of his conscription and service as a lictor, and began to wander through Ilsabard and up towards Eorzea, determined to see whatever there was to see. Moreover, he desired to put as much distance between himself and Garlemald as possible, and to never have to kill anyone again.
